# Set up a Slack integration (/docs/integrations/slack/setup-a-slack-integration)

Connect your Slack workspace, choose where notifications go, and start talking to the SiftGPT bot. Channel action tracking is an optional extra.

The Slack settings page manages workspace connections. Notification destinations and channel action tracking use separate controls.

## 1. Connect the workspace [#1-connect-the-workspace]

1. Open **Settings → Integrations → Slack**.
2. Choose **Add workspace**, then **Full access** for notifications and the bot. Choose **Chat only** if you only want the bot.
3. Complete Slack's authorization flow for the correct workspace. If Slack requires approval, ask your workspace administrator.
4. Return to Sift and open the connected workspace.

If you already use **Chat only**, choose **Enable notifications & actions** to authorize Full access. Channel action tracking still needs separate configuration.

## 2. Configure notifications [#2-configure-notifications]

**Channel alerts:** open the workflow that should notify your team. Choose its Slack destination in the notification step.

**Personal DMs:** open **Settings → Account & Help → Notification Preferences**. Enable Slack for the events you want. Check the **Slack email** if it differs from your Sift email. Send a **test DM** to confirm delivery.

Keep channel action tracking unconfigured if you only want notifications and the bot.

## 3. Try the bot [#3-try-the-bot]

In Slack, mention the Sift bot in a channel it can access, or send it a DM. Ask: "What are customers talking about most right now?" Continue with a follow-up question in the same thread.

## Optional: channel action tracking [#optional-channel-action-tracking]

Skip this step unless your team wants Slack conversations in the Sift inbox.

With **Full access**, use **Channel actions** to select channels for tracking. This controls which Slack messages Sift ingests as actions. It does not control channel alerts or personal notification DMs.

## Tips [#tips]

- **Chat only** does not enable notifications. Use **Full access** for notification delivery.
- Choose notification destinations in workflows, not in **Channel actions**.
- A personal Slack account connection for optional message tracking is not part of the notifications and bot setup.
- If delivery fails, check the workspace connection and permissions in Slack settings. Use a test DM to check personal delivery.
